Crack sealing refers to the process of repairing cracks on an asphalt surface. Neglecting cracks is one of the biggest mistakes that can reduce the lifespan of the asphalt. Cracks in the asphalt allow water and dirt to penetrate the surface, which causes the cracks to widen and the asphalt to break. To apply the crack sealer, the pavement cracks must be cleared of any loose debris and vegetation. This is essential to ensure that an airtight seal is created between the pavements. Failure to clean the crack thoroughly beforehand may prevent the hot rubberized sealant from bonding to the asphalt. 

Specialized machinery is used in routing to widen the crevice of the crack, exposing the entire crack and creating a reservoir large enough for adequate rubber application. After the crack has been cleaned of any loose debris, it is then sealed using a hot liquid rubber sealant. Without routing the crack prior to sealing, the liquid rubber will not be able to penetrate the crack properly and will leave much of the crack below the surface unsealed, causing it to reopen and negate the purpose of sealing it in the first place. Therefore, proper routing is necessary to ensure effective crack sealing.
